Thank you for your kind donations, as this work relies on the generosity of people to provide materials and funds to assist our work.
While we each provide some items such as cottons, or lining fabrics, we really appreciate that people donate materials for our sewing. Most of us have fabrics we have never got around to using. So…. here is your chance for a clean up!! Then our wonderful ladies sew the dresses, each comes in a pack which contains everything – even including the label and the undies.
Donating Fabrics and Notions
Before you donate fabric it is important to note that most families in the communities we send dresses too, do not have a washing machine. All washing is done in rivers, on rocks. So therefore the wear on the fabrics are significant. This is why we use sturdy non-see through cottons… they are the most appropriate, and cooler for the hot days.
We need lengths of about 40 cm and the width of the fabric as a minimum for a infants skirt, a size 8 dress takes about 1.2 metres. We cut as economically as possible and use left overs for pockets, linings, sleeves and trims. We cannot use polyesters or man-made fibres, see through fabrics, interlocks etc. If we are donated these we send them to other ladies who sew for charities. Nothing is wasted…. our cutting ensures everything is used efficiently we also piece together Days for Girls Bags from the cotton fabrics…..
What we need:
- Quality sturdy colourful cotton material in lengths of 40cm or more
- Cotton bias binding 10mm width
- Gross grain ribbon(for triming pockets)
- Cotton lace or broiderie anglaise
- Elastic 1cm width or more
